The Amputator is a community-made melee weapon for the Medic. It's a saw with angular edges and a distinct team-colored handle with an arrowhead-like extension near the top and the Medic's class icon in the center.

While this weapon is active, the Medic regenerates an extra three health per second, at the cost of the weapon dealing 20% less damage than the Bonesaw. Additionally, when taunting with this weapon, a Medicating Melody is produced and heals all nearby teammates, save for Soldiers with the Equalizer or the Escape Plan as their active weapon and Cloaked or disguised Spies. The Amputator taunt will not Overheal teammates.

The Medic will be credited with an assist kill if a teammate within the taunt's area of effect kills an enemy.

As of the November 21, 2013 Patch (Two Cities Update), the weapon's attributes were changed to:

  • -20% damage penalty.
  • +3 health regenerated per second when Weapon is Active bonus.

  • Equipping the Amputator with the Blutsauger will cause the attribute to read "0 health drained per second on wearer" instead of "+1 health regenerated per second on wearer".

  • Early in its development, the Amputator was originally going to be a dagger-like weapon named the Flammenspritze, German for "Fire Syringe".
  • This weapon's name is derived from 'amputation' - the act of surgically removing a projecting body part, hence the maker's description being "This terrifynig saw will give your enemies nightmares to come- if they live that is!"
